This sandy diamond is nestled within a pristine natural setting, a precious part of the famous European Natura 2000 network. As you embark on your aquatic escapades, you will find that most holidaymakers there have 'built' their own beach experience as other architects, carrying their precious equipment with them.
A Slice of Paradise: Relaxing at Halikounas Beach
However, if you tend to enjoy comfort, there is a unique oasis: the only section where a beach bar has taken its place in the sun. During the summer season, this spot unfolds a mosaic of delights, offering umbrellas, loungers, and an endless variety of refreshments to quench your thirst on the beach. For those craving a more spontaneous picnic, however, the entire coastline unfolds before you, inviting you to stretch out your towel and enjoy the salty sea breeze as you dine with nature itself.
Halikounas Beach is essentially a broad strip of sand that stretches impressively for about 3 kilometers in length, nestled between the waters of the Ionian Sea on one side and those of the western shore of the Korission Lake on the other. This lake has been recognized as a significant wetland habitat, so don't be surprised if you spot flamingos gracefully taking flight while you bask in the shoreline. The only thing separating the lake from the open sea is a narrow strip of land, 250 meters wide, where an artificial channel has been crafted from rocks and concrete to establish a connection with the sea.
This spot is known as "Tayo" (which is also the name of the beach bar mentioned earlier) and forms the southernmost section of Halikounas Beach. Interestingly, it appears that during prehistoric times, around 750,000 years ago, there was even a settlement in this area. Today, it hosts the facilities of the local fishermen, so when you visit, you'll have the chance to admire the traditional fishing boats as well.
As we mentioned at the beginning of the text, Halikounas is considered a paradise for those who love windsurfing or kite surfing. It's no coincidence that during the summer season, the "Kite Club Corfu" and the "Surf Center Corfu" are based here. This means that the southern and western winds have a strong presence in the area, creating waves almost on a regular basis, which at times (depending on their strength) can be quite substantial.
As you can understand, Halikounas Beach is ideal for everyone! Due to its expanse, wild beauty, shallow waters, and the fact that it remains an unspoiled beach, Halikounas has something to offer to all, attracting many different visitors. Regulars of the shore highly recommend not leaving without witnessing the sunset, which is considered enchanting, filled with shades of orange and intense colors that resemble flames on the horizon.
