But where did the name Kanoni come from? The whole area owes its name to the fortification works of the French, which took place during the period of French rule specifically in 1798. At that time, they decided to place an artillery battery south of Paleopolis, from which a single cannon has survived, that is still in place today and constitutes a much-photographed tourist attraction, an integral part of the island, constituting an indelible historical seal for the emerald island of the Ionian Sea.
The rich history of Kanoni in combination with the idyllic landscape where visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views, certainly make up a destination that is worth a visit. Below the steep slope where most of the restaurants and cafes offering panoramic views nestle, is the picturesque harbor of Kanoni with the handmade wooden fishing boats of the locals. Right there, always beautiful, stands the Holy Monastery of Panagia Vlachernon, a picturesque little church on the sea, which is connected to the area by a footbridge.
